Destinations good for a bit of sun time as well as geared for those looking for a little bit more.

In this section we have tried to highlight the many facets of Tanzania’s beach “ensemble” with an overview of everywhere that is good for a bit of sun time as well as those destinations that are geared for those looking for a little bit more.

ZANZIBAR

A Zanzibar Holiday package is more than just a beach holiday. So much more to do, explore the history of Stone Town, the Sultans of Zanzibar, the Sultans palace, the House of Wonders and the Slave Trade market. Enjoy a fascinating guided spice island tour while bargaining for some interesting tropical island mementos. Enjoy swimming with Dolphins, visit and snorkel Prison Island see the giant Tortoises and Coconut Crabs.

PEMBA ISLAND

Separated by the Pemba channel from its larger sister, Zanzibar to the south, the small island of Pemba is part of the Zanzibar archipelago of islands that run north from Dar es Salaam. With a fraction of the tourism, much fuller vegetation and some of the best diving in the world, there is good reason that many of the more intrepid try and come here for a few days in the sun!

SAADANI NATIONAL PARK

In between Pangani and Bagamoyo, and opposite the island of Zanzibar, lies the small national park of Saadani; this is the only place in Tanzania where it is possible to game drive in the morning and swim in the Indian Ocean before lunch! While not necessarily the most prolific of destinations for game numbers, the park holds an interesting array of animals and is great for those that are looking for a scenic and interesting beach stay.

MAFIA ISLAND

Due south from Zanzibar and opposite the river mouth of the mighty Rufiji, lies the small island of Mafia. Largely overlooked by the waves of tourism that now feature on Zanzibar, the island has a ramshackle feel to it, which only adds to its charm. Surrounded by a protected marine park, like Pemba, this is a good destination for those that are keen on spending a bit of time in the underwater world.

SWAHILI CULTURAL TOURS

A four-hour excursion, which takes you to Kizimkazi to the southern part of the island. Kizimkazi is a traditional fishing and farming village. It has a long history dating in the 12 century. It is the first place visited by the Persian who built a mosque in 1170. In the mosque are inscription written in kofic. The exceptional long graves here are still a misery. A wall whose remains are visible even today formerly surrounded the village.

Most residents of this village are fisherman but are also small farmers. Typical activities include food gathering, artisanship and businesses. You will enjoy seafood and locally grown fruits and root crops such as cassava, bananas and coconuts too. A visit to Qur-ani School and traditional drama and dance are arranged.

SOUTH OF DAR ES SALAAM

At around a ten minute flight or a two hour drive to the south of Dar es Salaam lies some of Africa’s least discovered and more beautiful stretches of coastline and some of Tanzania’s most hidden gems. Perfect to start off an itinerary or to round it off with a flourish, the regions to the south of Dar es Salaam are certainly worth considering for any itinerary. Please see our recommendations for properties to stay in below:

Recommended for: Tanzania beaches and Horse riding.

DOLPHIN TOUR – Zanzibar Island

Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which can often be sighted following a short boat trip from the village. If you are lucky, you may be able to swim quite close to the dolphins, which can be a very rewarding experience. We are doing this trip in the afternoon to avoid the crowds of tourists in the morning, which in big numbers disturbing the dolphins. Kizimkazi is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth a visit for both natural and cultural reasons.

NORTH COAST (NUNGWI)

A full day excursion to the extreme north of the island via Marahubi, and Mvuleni where you can visit the Portuguese Ruins. There are number of very interesting things to see and do including the traditional fishing village itself with resident speaking a peculiar swahili dialect. Then the turtle aquarium with various species. A traditional boat yard and local market are amazing. At the end of the walk you can either relax on the sandy beaches or go swimming in the natural sea. Lunch and refreshments are arranged there to taste local delicacies or international food.
